| Pentecost— An experience that anchored and transformed the followers of Christ in the early Christian age, and continues to anchor and transform lives today. We who have embraced, and tasted of this experience are continually in awe and curiosity as to God’s divine purpose and love towards us in giving the gift of the Holy Ghost. We of the Metropolitan Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Southern California, Church of God in Christ Intl., consider it an honor worthy of note, to be located in the same geographical area, and have traceable religious roots to the world changing Azusa Street Revival of 1906 in Los Angeles CA. An historian once said that “history is to a nation, what memory is to an individual” To revisit the history of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and to look at the state of man and the times that he lived in when God chose such a visitation, is a memory recall that is truly necessary. In this publication, we will highlight the pioneers of early pentecostalism within the Church of God in Christ, California, and show how each of our member churches within this Jurisdiction, has its unique place in California’s rich Pentecostal history. Special thanks to Bishop J. Bernard Hackworth, for allowing us to pursue this publication, and to Elder Aaron Howard of 1st Jurisdiction for the historical Journal they did in 1994 which served to inspire this work. |
